Millions of data and email addicts left jonesing during service outage

(Newser) – Five million BlackBerry scrollers in the U.S. and Asia were stymied for 12 hours over Tuesday night and yesterday morning while Research in Motion frantically fixed a service outage. RIM hopes it'll draw more customers

(NEWSER) - RIM's latest effort to quench their Blackberry users' iPhone envy is an application store, the Wall Street Journal reports. The company expects about 1,000 applications to be posted at the new App World this week—still a trickle compared to Apple's 15,000. Those now available include apps for social networking, such as Facebook, and the music service Shazam. (AP) - Struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said today it will cede most consumer markets after failing to compete with flashier touch-screen phones such as Apple's iPhone and models that run Google's Android software. Instead, RIM said it will return to its roots and focus on business customers, many of whom prefer BlackBerrys for their security. Balsillie, Lazaridis insist it had nothing to do with investor pressure

(NEWSER) - A big shuffle at Research in Motion last night, as Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis—who have served together as co-CEOs for two decades—stepped down, turning over the top position at the struggling company to former chief operating officer Thorsten Heins. Balsillie and Lazaridis also gave up their co-chairmanship, and the board named current board member Barbara Stymiest the new chair. Company co-founder Lazaridis will serve as vice chair, and Balsillie will remain a board member; the two remain directors and significant shareholders, the Wall Street Journal reports. More»

BlackBerry Users Sue RIM Over Outage

Lawsuits say firm hasn't taken responsibility for disaster

(NEWSER) - Research In Motion has been slapped with a pair of lawsuits over its recent protracted email, IM, and web outage , one on behalf of users in the US and the other on behalf of users in Canada. The US suit, filed yesterday in California, was filed by user Eric Mitchell on behalf of all users who had a service agreement with RIM at the time of the outages—which the suit notes includes 2.4 million people in California alone, Reuters reports. Company will hand out at least 12 premium apps in apology move

(NEWSER) - In an attempt to appease the tens of millions of angry customers who were affected by the days-long BlackBerry outage last week, Research In Motion is handing out $100 worth of free premium apps starting Wednesday. "We’ve worked hard to earn [customers’] trust over the past 12 years and we’re committed to providing the high standard of reliability they expect,” says the company’s co-CEO in a statement. “We are taking immediate and aggressive steps to help prevent something like this from happening again." But the expensive solution may not be enough to earn back the trust of corporate customers, Reuters notes. More»
