MS Turanor PlanetSolar lands safely in Monaco

(NEWSER) - A cool, spaceship-like catamaran dropped anchor in Monaco yesterday after completing the first-ever round-the-world trip by a solar-powered vessel, the LA Times reports. The MS Turanor PlanetSolar left Monaco in September of 2010 with the goal of showing "that we have the technologies as well as the knowledge to become sustainable and safeguard our blue planet," said Raphael Domjan, a Swiss engineer who dreamed up the project. Pentagon pulled out ahead of bankruptcy filing

(NEWSER) - Solar-energy firm Solyndra was one of three companies picked for a $1 million Navy pilot program for new technologies—but the Navy cut ties to the firm the day before Solyndra declared bankruptcy. A top investor in Solyndra, RockPort Capital, also sits on the Pentagon's emerging technology panel. When a RockPort principal pointed the Navy to Solyndra, he revealed RockPort's investment in the solar firm, he says, but he didn't tell the military about Solyndra's financial troubles. More»

Brian Harrison considered leaving before bankruptcy filing: company

(AP) - The CEO of the solar energy company that sought bankruptcy protection after receiving a $528 million loan guarantee from the Obama administration has resigned. Solyndra said in papers filed in Delaware bankruptcy court today that Brian Harrison resigned last Friday. Harrison's resignation was contemplated even before the company sought bankruptcy protection, the firm said. Solyndra's filing was in response to a Justice Department motion to appoint a trustee to oversee the bankruptcy case. More»

(NEWSER) - One of the showpieces for President Obama’s green jobs push is going under—and leaving the federal government on the hook for $535 million worth of guaranteed loans in the process. Solyndra, a California-based solar cell manufacturer, told workers yesterday that it would be closing its remaining plant, laying off its 1,100 workers and declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The company’s cylindrical cells were innovative, but proved unable to compete with cheaper offerings from China. More»

Giant solar tower will start going up next year

(USER SUBMITTED) - It's going to be a strange sight to be sure: America's tallest tower will be smack dab in the middle of the deserts of the Southwest, and for good reason. This skyscraper will not be an office building, but a massive solar energy complex, reports KNXV-TV . The tower, to be twice as tall as the Empire State Building and just short of the world's tallest building in Dubai, will generate power for more than 150,000 homes around La Paz County, Arizona.
