Kansas, Oklahoma warned of 'life-threatening' weather

(AP) - More than a dozen possible tornadoes were reported today as forecasters warned residents across the nation's midsection to brace for "life-threatening" weather. An apparent tornado took down barns, outbuildings, and large trees in southeast Nebraska, and Johnson County emergency director Clint Strayhorn said he was still trying to determine how long the twister was on the ground and how much damage it did. "I'm on a 2-mile stretch that this thing is on the ground and I haven't even gotten to the end of it yet," he said as he walked the path of destruction near the Johnson-Nemaha county line. More»

Death toll in Oklahoma reaches eight, including one child

(NEWSER) - The death toll in the violent storms slamming Oklahoma is up to eight. The state medical examiner’s office said this morning that one of the victims is a child. Other severe storms raked the central US last night and early today, ripping the roof off a fire station and killing three in Arkansas, the AP reports. Violent storms bring month's death toll to 12 in the state

(NEWSER) - Violent storms wiped out much of a small town in Arkansas last night, destroying homes and leaving overturned tractor-trailers and dangling power lines in its wake. Officials believe a tornado hit Vilonia, a town of about 3,800 people 25 miles north of Little Rock, leaving a 3-mile-wide path of destruction. "The town's gone," one resident tells the AP . At least two people were killed in Vilonia and three more in other towns across the state, bringing April's storm-related death toll to 12. More»
