(NEWSER) - Two shareholders filed separate lawsuits against JPMorgan and its top executives in the wake of its $2 billion trading loss , accusing them of misleading investors about the company's risk exposure. One aspires to be a class action suit, representing anyone who owned JPMorgan stock from April 13 to May 10, the Wall Street Journal reports, explaining that April 13 was the date of the company's first-quarter results conference call. The other suit is a so-called "derivative" suit, which means that any damages recovered would be returned back to JPMorgan instead of shareholders. More»

Mets’ Owners Settle Madoff Case for $162M

Money to come from bosses' payout as Madoff victims

(NEWSER) - The New York Mets' owners have avoided a trial over what they knew about Bernie Madoff's Ponzi scheme by settling today with the trustee for Madoff victims for $162 million, the New York Times reports. Trustee Irving Picard had sued Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz for $1 billion (later knocked down to $386 million), saying they disregarded warnings about Madoff's dealings; they claimed ignorance. Much of the $162 million will be balanced by money Katz and Wilpon will receive as "net losers" from the scheme themselves. More»

FDA to Rule on BPA Ban by March

Agency agrees to deadline as part of lawsuit settlement

(NEWSER) - The FDA will finally make a firm decision about whether to ban BPA by March 31, thanks to a lawsuit settlement. The Natural Resources Defense Council called on the agency to ban the controversial chemical in 2008, but the FDA didn't take action within the time required by law; that prompted the NRDC's suit, the Washington Post reports. The US is spending $30 million to investigate the reported harmful effects of the chemical. More»

Female Workers Hit Walmart With New Class-Action Suits

Colossal nationwide suit split into regional cases

(NEWSER) - Four months after the Supreme Court decided that 1.5 million past and present female workers at Walmart couldn't be lumped together in a single class-action suit , the first of what promises to be a flood of fresh lawsuits have begun. The original plaintiffs—who say they were denied pay rises and promotions because of gender bias—have filed class-action suits on behalf 95,000 of the retail giant's female employees in California, and on behalf of up to 45,000 workers in Texas.
