But entitlements must be adjusted, speaker says

(NEWSER) - Despite Republican leaders' push against a tax hike, the super committee debt deal will include new tax revenues, John Boehner said yesterday. "I think there is room for revenues, but I think there clearly is a limit to the amount of revenues that are available." His comments follow a bipartisan letter penned by 100 House members saying revenues must be "on the table." Still, Boehner said Republicans will bend on revenues only if the Democrats are open to reforming programs like Medicare and Social Security, CBS News reports. More»

(NEWSER) - With their November 23 deadline looming, Democrats and Republicans on the deficit “supercommittee” exchanged initial plans yesterday—and they weren’t even close. While both sides are willing to cut entitlements, Republicans remain unwilling to compromise on taxes, Politico reports. The Republican proposal—which is about a third smaller than the Democrats’ plan —does include $640 billion in new revenues, but it comes from things like hikes in Medicare co-pays and assumptions that future tax reforms (read: cuts) will spur economic growth. Amazon to California: Ditch Tax, Get 7K Jobs

State senate, local retailers hostile to offer

(NEWSER) - Amazon has got a tempting offer for California, which is battling the nation’s second-highest unemployment rate: If the state delays a new online sales tax for two years, the Internet retailer will bring 7,000 new jobs to the Golden State. Amazon would also halt its push for a voter referendum on the issue. But Dems controlling the state legislature don’t plan to accept the proposal, Reuters reports. More»
