(NEWSER) - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in much of southern California amid “extraordinary and continuing rainfall,” CNN reports. Another in a series of storms is expected to bring more flooding and landslides; the declaration authorizes state agencies to help local ones in addressing the weather. Loyal Lab Sticks With Dog Pal Hit by Car

Shelter saves 'Grace,' seeking home

(NEWSER) - Doggone it, that's loyalty. A faithful black Labrador braved whizzing traffic to stick with a pal fatally hit by a car on a busy boulevard in Los Angeles County. A good Samaritan placed traffic cones to protect the dogs and took a cell-phone video of the arresting sight, and animal control was contacted. Though it was too late for her pal, the two-year-old female lab was taken to a local shelter, where the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center staff dubbed her "Grace," and "showered her with admiration and love," said a spokesman. If the dog isn't claimed by her owner, she'll be put up for adoption. "When I saw the video clip taken from a passer-by's cell phone, it made me emotional," a staffer told the SGVN Tribune . More»

Much of US Choked by Drought

61% of lower 48 suffering drought-like conditions

(NEWSER) - Last year, dry conditions cost Southern farmers some $10 billion, and once again, things are looking bleak. Some 61% of the lower 48 states is experiencing drought or "abnormally dry" weather—the biggest proportion of the country since September 2007, USA Today reports. Just two states have completely escaped such conditions: Ohio and Alaska, federal monitors say. The trouble comes after a mild, mainly dry winter. More»

Skier Critically Injured in Tahoe Avalanche

Ski partner flees for help

(NEWSER) - Rescuers found a critically injured skier trapped in an avalanche yesterday near a Lake Tahoe ski resort. The unidentified man was one of a group of three skiing in northern California back country near the Alpine Meadows Ski Resort when the avalanche hit. One of the skiers was able to flee for help. The injured skier was trapped in rugged terrain that was difficult for rescuers to reach, reports the Sacramento Bee. The man has been taken to a local hospital. Homeless Killer Suspect Accused of 2 More Murders

Itzcoatl Ocampo to be charged with stabbing Raquel Estrada, Juan Herrera

(NEWSER) - Authorities believe Itzcoatl Ocampo, the 23-year-old Iraq veteran charged with stabbing four homeless men to death in California, also killed two other people—ones that he knew. Ocampo will be charged today with the murders of Raquel Estrada, 53, and her 34-year-old son, Juan Herrera, the mother and brother of a friend Ocampo has known since high school. That friend, Eder Herrera, had originally been charged with the murders, but those charges were dropped Friday, CNN reports. More»
