Supermarket Breach Exposes 4M Credit Cards

Hannaford grocery stores report 1,800 related fraud cases

(NEWSER) - A data security breach at Hannaford, an East Coast supermarket chain, has exposed the credit card information of 4.2 million customers and resulted in 1,800 cases of fraud so far, the Boston Globe reports. The breach, which went undetected for three months, is one of the largest ever, the AP notes. Hannaford, which also runs Sweetbay supermarkets, says no names or personal information got out, just account numbers of credit and debit cards. More»

Feds Test Simplified Credit Card Agreement

Short form in plain English could become industry standard

(NEWSER) - The government's consumer finance watchdog has created a credit card agreement that's five times shorter than usual and written in plain English. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is asking for the public's feedback on the prototype, which can be viewed here . The agreement is just over 1,000 words long and does away with much of the legalese that studies show befuddles up to two-thirds of credit card users, AP reports. More»

(NEWSER) - Last year the number of identity theft victims in the US jumped 12%, while the number of Internet-related fraud cases went up 23%. But the problem isn't just hackers, say experts: In many cases, we're exposing our private data to anyone and everyone who knows where to look.
