(NEWSER) - It was bound to happen: Reynolds American is launching a new ad campaign riffing on New York City's new anti-smoking legislation. “Smokers, switch to smoke-free Camel Snus and reclaim the world’s greatest city,” one ad urges. The ads began running in newspapers last week, just as the new laws took effect, the Wall Street Journal reports. Brooklyn mother, 18, gave birth shortly before allegedly tossing baby

(AP) - A newborn baby tossed down a New York City housing project's trash chute survived the eight-story fall because he landed on a pile of garbage and the compactor was jammed. A maintenance worker heard the baby's cries coming from the trash compactor yesterday morning in the Walt Whitman Houses in Brooklyn. The baby was taken to Brooklyn Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. More»

NYC Bans Smoking in Parks, Beaches

Council vote follows Bloomberg's request

(NEWSER) - The New York City Council voted to ban smoking in parks, beaches, and public plazas, the Daily News reports. Amid speeches on friends lost to smoking and arguments for civil liberties, members were divided, 36 to 12, in favor of the ban. Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a call for the ban in September after the Daily News published photos of vast numbers of cigarette butts littering Coney Island. More»

Mayor wants to take ban outdoors to cover parks, walkways

(NEWSER) - Mayor Bloomberg wants smokers to stay out of Central Park and parts of Times Square. The anti-tobacco mayor has proposed widening the city's smoking ban to cover parks, beaches, pedestrian plazas, and boardwalks, reports the New York Post . Falling Tree Branch Kills Baby in Central Park

Freak accident injures mother of 6-month-old

(NEWSER) - A 6-month-old girl is dead and her mother hospitalized after a branch fell 40 feet from a tree and hit them as they posed for pictures at the Central Park Zoo yesterday. Karla DelGallo of New Jersey had Gianna Ricciutti in her arms and "was trying to get away from the branch," another zoo patron tells the New York Daily News . "She tripped and fell and the baby flew out of her arms." They were rushed to the hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead. More»
