(NEWSER) - The US government is a-OK with you jailbreaking your iPhone but, not surprisingly, Apple is not. To that end, the company applied for a patent to disable jailbroken devices, the Register reports. The carriers figure they'll make up the loss with monthly cell phone bills—but Verizon and AT&T stock have both dropped, and Sprint's losses have ballooned by 40%, since they started selling the coveted iPhone, the Los Angeles Times reports. AT&T reports 200K orders, calls sales strong

(NEWSER) - The just-announced iPhone 4S may not be an iPhone 5 , but it is still another big hit for Apple, which sold out its pre-orders in just 12 hours, reports the International Business Times . AT&T alone reported more than 200,000 pre-orders, saying it was the most successful iPhone launch ever, and Sprint and Verizon also reported strong sales. (NEWSER) - Is Apple losing its grip on smartphone buyers? Google's Android is already the most widely-used operating system , and a new survey shows it may also be the most wanted. In a poll of US cell phone consumers this year, Nielsen found that 31% planned to buy a new smartphone and wanted an Android phone. AT&T stopped offering unlimited plans over the summer, and admitted it did not anticipate how much stress the iPhone would place on its network.
