The 18-month-old predicting pachyderm has so far picked the winner of every German match and the semifinal victors in the Women's World Cup. How does Nelly do it? By booting (actually, "trunking") a soccer ball into one of two nets marked with the flags of upcoming contenders. "Sometimes we have to be careful that she doesn't dismantle the playing field," says a German zoo spokeswoman of the big rambunctious baby. "Some days she isn't in the mood, but other days she gets really enthusiastic: She trumpets and runs so excitedly that the trainers have to really watch out." More»

ESPN to Launch 3D Station

Channel will broadcast live games beginning in June

(NEWSER) - ESPN will kick off the first-ever 3D television station in June with a live World Cup match. After that, ESPN 3D will broadcast 85 other events this year, including the Summer X Games, and assorted NBA and college basketball and football games, all of them live. (NEWSER) - A treatment featuring horse placenta is becoming all the rage for injured European soccer stars, with two Liverpool players just the latest to seek treatment. The procedure, performed by a Serbian woman, sees the placenta—a leftover of the breeding process—injected into the hurt area, then massaged further into the tissue. Marijana Kovacevic emphasized the “alternative” aspects of the procedure, the Independent notes, using candles and darkened rooms. More»

Runners' 'motion groove' can prevents arthritis in old age

(NEWSER) - Conventional wisdom holds that running will eventually trash your knees by wearing down their cartilage, ultimately leading to arthritis. But that may have to be revised: Recent studies suggest that runners may have healthier knees in old age than their sedentary peers, reports Gretchen Reynolds for the New York Times. Scientists theorize that runners’ knees develop a “motion groove” that conditions the cartilage to support rhythmic stress, protecting it into old age. More»
