(NEWSER) - Well, Alec Baldwin will certainly not be happy to hear this: Starting Friday, if you're on an American Airlines flight, you may use your iPad during takeoff and landing ... as long as you're the pilot. The FAA issued the new rules yesterday, the New York Times reports. Of course, the iPads won't exactly be used to play Words With Friends ; they'll replace paper flight manuals. FAA Safety Program Riddled With Holes

Airplane maintenance not rigorously checked by FAA

(NEWSER) - An FAA program designed to ensure safe practices at US airlines has lapses that could cost travelers their lives, the AP reports. A report by the Department of Transportation's inspector general found that the oversight program was riddled with holes—the most glaring lapse being in the program's review of overall maintenance policies and procedures. That review, and associated recommendations, is supposed to be conducted every five years. But it has been delayed at eight major carriers, in some cases for up to eight years. More»

(NEWSER) - Inspectors have found a gaping 1-foot-by-2-foot hole in the fuselage of a Boeing 757 that was forced to make an emergency landing Tuesday.
