Ceiling on loans backed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac goes to $729K in 70 counties

(NEWSER) - Despite two White House proposals floated earlier in the year to get the federal government out of the housing market, President Obama will likely opt for the third option: reforming the housing market over the next decade but continuing to extend federal loan subsidies and insure most mortgages, reports the Washington Post . This option would also keep Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, albeit possibly under different names and with new regulations that might include larger reserve requirements, shrunken portfolios, and fees to create an insurance pool for bad mortgages. (NEWSER) - Another mortgage lender specializing in low income borrowers is in trouble: the Federal Housing Administration. The agency which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could soon share their fate, as borrowers default on the low-downpayment mortgages it insures, critics told a House subcommittee yesterday. “It appears destined for a taxpayer bailout in the next 24 to 36 months,” said an ex-Fannie Mae executive. Freddie Mac sees shares rise 122% on earnings

(NEWSER) - Stocks wavered on the heels of last week’s rally, closing slightly lower as investors wait for comments from the Fed, the Wall Street Journal reports. Federal Reserve policy makers will conclude a 2-day meeting on Wednesday and perhaps issue a new assessment of the economic recovery. Despite a broad decline, Freddie Mac soared 128% after reporting strong earnings. The Dow closed 32 points lower at 9,338. The Nasdaq lost 8 points, closing at 1,992, and the S&P 500 shed 3 points to settle at 1,007. More»
