(AP) - The Philippines and the United States have signed an accord to jointly search for the remains of American troops missing in action in the Philippines during World War II. The "statement of intent" signed today by Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario and Ambassador Harry Thomas Jr. was the first step in setting guidelines for the search, according to the US Embassy. Families of the missing have not been able to know their final stories and have not given them a proper burial for more than 65 years. Neither country gave figures of the missing. More»

Stimulus funds will go to other states

(NEWSER) - The US is redistributing $1.2 billion in federal stimulus money that had been headed to Ohio and Wisconsin, after both states' Republican governors-elect called for an end to proposed train projects, arguing they were unnecessary and would cost millions to operate. “Wisconsin taxpayers were victorious today in defeating this project,” said incoming Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, who had argued the train line would be unpopular and would cost the state about $7.5 million a year. She tried to sneak into boyfriend's home

(NEWSER) - A California doctor died after trying to enter her "on-again, off-again" boyfriend's home through the chimney and getting stuck, police say. Jacquelyn Kotarac was found dead 3 days later after a woman house-sitting noticed an odd odor coming from the fireplace, the Los Angeles Times reports. Authorities, who have deemed the death an accident, say she died from asphyxiation. More»

(AP) - Police say a 12-year-old Southern California boy is dead after he apparently asphyxiated himself for thrills in the so-called "choking game." The boy died last week after tying a rope to his neck inside his home, the Santa Monica Police Department said yesterday. Officers found him in cardiac arrest, and he died at the hospital soon after.
