The company is offering a total of $1 million in prizes to people who can find bugs or vulnerabilities in Chrome at next week's CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver, reports Wired . Hackers stand to win $60,000 for a "full Chrome exploit" using only bugs found in Chrome, $40,000 for a "partial exploit" using a Chrome bug plus a bug elsewhere, or a $20,000 "consolation reward" for a Chrome hack using bugs found in Flash or Windows. (NEWSER) - Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobility isn’t just about giving the company a seamless ability to blend hardware and software—it also buys Google a new set of patents, helping to shield it from Apple and Microsoft complaints about intellectual property infringement. Apple is already battling Samsung over the “theft” of its IP, and Microsoft has launched similar attacks on makers of Android devices. “By grabbing Motorola,” writes Kit Eaton at Fast Company , “Google's certainly gained access to more patents to shore up its Android patent portfolio and thus enable it to counter (and respond with counter suits) any future IP threats.” More»

PayPal Sues Google, Says It Stole Trade Secrets

Goes after 'Google Wallet' mobile system

(NEWSER) - EBay and its PayPal subsidiary have filed a lawsuit accusing Google of stealing its trade secrets in the creation of its Google Wallet product . The suit names two executives—Osama Bedier and Stephanie Tilenius—who jumped ship to Google after long stints working at PayPal and eBay respectively, Reuters reports. It accuses Bedier of “misappropriating trade secrets,” and says that before leaving the company, he transferred documents related to PayPal’s mobile payment strategy to his personal computer. More»

Massive Meteor Crater Found by Google Earth

10-ton meteor hit only a few thousand years ago

(NEWSER) - An Italian mineralogist found a massive meteor crater in the Egyptian desert using only Google Earth, the Telegraph reports. The meteor is thought to have hit as recently as a few thousand years ago, and geologists say its impact site is one of the best preserved ever found. The previously unknown Kamil crater is about 52 feet deep and 183 feet across, meaning early humans likely saw the explosion for hundreds of miles. More»
