Ethiopia denies US presence, Air Force doesn't

(NEWSER) - Not only has the United States built a network of military drone bases in East Africa , it is flying its armed Reaper drones out of a base in southern Ethiopia on secret missions against al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups from Somalia to Yemen, reports the Washington Post . The Ethiopian government is denying the presence of US drones on its soil, but an Air Force spokesman says operations “will continue as long as the government of Ethiopia welcomes our cooperation on these varied security programs." Somali Militants Launch Ramadan Offensive

Despite deadly famine, al-Shabab forces attack Mogadishu

(NEWSER) - For the fifth straight year, Islamic militant group al-Shabab used the start of Ramadan to launch attacks in Somalia, reports CNN . Despite one of the worst famines in 60 years , al-Shabab fighters attacked African Union forces in northeastern Mogadishu yesterday with suicide bombers, guns, and mortars. "In the midst of a famine seizing Somalia, the extremists are choosing to focus on killing, not saving life," said a spokesman for African Union forces. More»

Ethiopia: 4.5M Need Food Aid

$400M, or 380 tons of food, needed in Eastern Africa

(AP) - An estimated 4.5 million Ethiopians are in need of food assistance, says a government official—an increase of 40%. Nearly $400 million is needed to fill the country's food gap, adds Ethiopia's state minister of agriculture, who says Ethiopia needs to distribute 380 metric tons of food. A drought centered in the triangle where Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia meet has sent tens of thousands of people pouring into refugee camps in search of food . The director of the US government aid mission in Ethiopia says US officials are concerned that the severity of the drought is being underestimated. More»
