Small quakes hit hours after California holds annual drill

(NEWSER) - Two earthquakes shook the San Francisco Bay Area yesterday, the same day that California held its annual earthquake preparedness drill and nearly 22 years to the day after a quake killed 63 people in northern California. A 4.0-magnitude quake hit the Bay Area, centered near Berkeley, at 2:30 in the afternoon, and a 3.8-magnitude temblor followed some six hours later, AP reports. No damage or injuries were reported from either quake. The stronger quake was a "sharp little earthquake" that had a "very nice impulsive character," a United States Geological Survey seismologist says. More»

Nobody injured by 3.7 quake 105 years after city flattened

(NEWSER) - The San Francisco area was jolted by a small earthquake on the 105th anniversary of the 1906 quake that killed thousands and leveled much of the city. Nobody was injured by yesterday's 3.7 magnitude quake, but thousands of homes lost power for close to an hour, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "What this earthquake does is serve as a good reminder for us to make sure we are prepared for the next big one," said a US Geological Survey spokesman. More»

Smithsonian volunteer uncovers six previously unpublished photos

(NEWSER) - For the first time, history buffs can view the devastation of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake in true color photographs. The Smithsonian Institution has uncovered a set of six photos taken after the earthquake that appear to be not only the first color photos of the ruins, but the first color photographs ever taken of San Francisco. Photography pioneer Frederick Ives took the pictures from the roof of a hotel; they also show the damage wrought by the fire that followed the earthquake. "We only know the world (of the past) in black and white," says a Smithsonian volunteer, so it's extraordinary to view a blue sky and gritty landscape as it was. More»

Northern California Cleans Up After 6.5 Earthquake

No tsunami danger following Humboldt County temblor

(NEWSER) - Communities in Humboldt County in northern California are cleaning up today after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake rocked the coastal area yesterday afternoon. " It was like the street was breakdancing, " a local resident who was driving when the temblor struck around 4:30pm told the Times-Standard of Eureka, 33 miles from the epicenter. There were numerous reports of power outages and property damage, but no serious injuries and no tsunami warning. More»
