(AP) - Coast Guard crews saw no signs today that the pilot of a small plane survived when it went down in the Gulf of Mexico about three hours after two F-15 fighter jets tried to make contact with him. The plane landed right-side up on the ocean surface and had been floating right after the crash, said the Coast Guard chief. (NEWSER) - We may never know exactly what made JetBlue pilot Clayton Osbon come unhinged, but the New York Daily News has uncovered tragedy in his past. The pilot's father, who Osbon began flying with as a teenager, died in a plane crash in 1995. The elder Osbon and a friend were en route to the Bahamas from Wisconsin when their twin-engine plane lost power near Daytona Beach in Florida. (AP) - Two single-engine float planes collided as they flew near an Alaskan lake and one crashed and burned, killing the four people aboard, authorities said. The second plane, a Cessna 206 with only the pilot aboard, was able to return to Anchorage International Airport and make an emergency landing despite significant damage. But a Cessna 180 was destroyed by the impact and fire, an FAA spokesman said. "It was engulfed in flames on the ground," Alaska State Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said. More»

(NEWSER) - A pilot is in critical condition following a fiery plane crash in Utah, and investigators are trying to figure out what happened. The Cessna 210 single-engine plane went down in a residential neighborhood last night, ripping into pieces as it fell. Pilot Clayton Roop, 46, had been cleared for landing at a nearby airport; at the time, visibility was minimal due to fog, CNN reports. One resident describes finding a “confused, hurt” Roop lying on the ground, but notes that he was able to talk. More»
