(NEWSER) - The prominent Chinese human rights activist Hu Jia has been freed from prison, after serving three-and-a-half years for "inciting subversion," reports the BBC . Hu's wife posted the news on Twitter this morning. "We are fine and happy. Need to rest for some time. Thank you everyone," the message said. With a large security presence around Hu's home in Beijing, the family is keeping quiet for now, and Hu appears to be under some form of house arrest. (NEWSER) - The US is in "high-level talks" with China over the blind human rights activist who recently fled Chinese authorities , according to a group based in Texas. Chen Guangcheng "is under US protection and high-level talks are currently under way between US and Chinese officials regarding Chen's status," said the ChinaAid Association, which claims to have information from an insider, the AP reports. Chen reportedly took refuge in the US embassy in Beijing just days before Hillary Clinton and Timothy Geithner are scheduled to arrive there on an official visit. More»

(NEWSER) - A Chinese writer has been hit with a nine-year jail sentence for "inciting subversion of state power" after he posted online essays demanding free speech and government reform, reports the BBC . The sentence follows a two-hour, closed-door trial that Chen Wei's wife called "a performance" whose outcome was settled beforehand. Chen was one of hundreds detained following an online movement for Chinese protests echoing the Arab Spring, dubbed the Jasmine Revolution. More»

Rights activists criticize Beijing's conditions for release

(NEWSER) - Chinese artist and provocateur Ai Weiwei may be out of jail , but that hardly means he's out of trouble, as authorities have banned Ai from traveling or talking publicly for a year, reports Reuters . It's effectively a gag on the talkative and media-savvy artist. "The key thing is these two conditions—the media and the Internet," said someone close to Ai's family.
