(NEWSER) - The massive data breach at Citigroup has alarmed customers, angered lawmakers, and sparked debate on whether big banks are spending enough money on protecting their customers' information, the New York Times finds. Credit card companies have devoted their resources to preventing fraud from occurring when data is stolen and not invested enough in preventing data breaches from occurring in the first place, analysts say. While banks have gotten better at curtailing fraud—today, it costs banks 5 cents of every $100 changed, down from 15 cents in 1992—some say banks have little reason to try to shrink that even more. (NEWSER) - The Salvation Army's red kettles that collect holiday donations—a symbol for over 100 years—are getting an update. Numerous sites across the country will take credit cards this year as part of a pilot program dubbed "cashless kettles." Earlier tests suggest that the program has promise: in Dallas-Fort Worth last year, the average donor using a credit card gave $14, while cash contributors gave $2. More»

Dow Down 41; Tech Rises, Banks Fall

September rally sees slight pullback

(NEWSER) - Stock indices finished mixed today after the markets reached what most traders saw as a slight pause in a very strong September, the Wall Street Journal reports. Financials led declines: AmEx fell 2.9%, while Bank of America lost 1.8%. Google rose 1.1% after Citigroup analysts boosted their third-quarter estimate. The Dow closed down 41.34 points at 9,778.86. The Nasdaq gained 5.18, closing at 2,138.04, while the S&P 500 lost 3.64, finishing at 1,064.66. More»
