(NEWSER) - A new vent opened in a Hawaii volcano Saturday, spewing lava some 80 feet in the air, scientists say. The fissure near Kilauea volcano’s Puu Oo crater in the Big Island’s Hawaii Volcanoes National Park expanded to a whopping 1.4 miles in length yesterday with lava eruptions all along it, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports. The vent opened after the crater’s floor collapsed at least 377 feet, kicking up a cloud of ash and fumes. Halemaumau's eruption mild for now, but officials well aware of dangers

(NEWSER) - Halemaumau Crater on Hawaii's Big Island is acting up—venting gas and the occasional gobbet of lava. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is classifying the activity as the crater's first eruption since 1982, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports; scientists are unsure whether the trickle could turn into a larger, more dangerous convulsion. Hawaii Verifies Obama Birth Records Yet Again

(NEWSER) - We somehow doubt that this will finally put the birther brouhaha to bed, but: After what the AP describes as "a nearly three-month back and forth," Hawaii has verified President Obama's birth records to Arizona. Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett had threatened to remove Obama from the November ballot if he did not receive verification, but Hawaii—which has confirmed Obama's citizenship repeatedly since 2008—first wanted Bennett to prove that he required the records as part of ordinary business. Bennett did that, so Hawaii passed along the verification. It's not yet clear whether Bennett's office is satisfied. More»

Judges' $1M Maui Trip Turns Heads in Congress

Ninth Circuit conference would include full-service spa

(NEWSER) - US senators are scrutinizing a planned Maui getaway for circuit court judges that could cost more than $1 million in taxpayer dollars, Fox News reports. Scheduled for August, the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference would allow judges, attorneys, staff, and "special guests" to stay at a Hyatt Regency resort spa with a per diem baseline of $289. Activities such as golf, paddle-board lessons, and a floral design workshop would be available but not on the taxpayers' tab. More»
