(NEWSER) - The Utah Supreme Court stunned prosecutors when it tossed out the only successful conviction against Warren Jeffs, the leader of the polygamist FLDS church. (NEWSER) - Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs, who has been serving 10 years to life for being an accessory to rape , was granted a new trial today, the Deseret News reports. The Utah Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the jury instructions delivered during Jeffs' 2007 trial were faulty. "We regret the effect our opinion today may have on the victim of the underlying crime, to whom we do not wish to cause additional pain," the opinion reads. More»

Rape charge sparks move at Warren Jeffs' polygamy site

(NEWSER) - Texas authorities pulled 52 kids from the compound of a polygamous sect today after a girl said she was raped there, the Houston Chronicle reports. Eighteen of the children were bussed out by court order, based on claims of abuse or neglect, and put into temporary custody. (NEWSER) - Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs refused to sign a waiver allowing his extradition to Texas at a brief court hearing in Utah yesterday. Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, faces bigamy and sexual assault charges in Texas for his alleged involvement with underage girls at the Yearning for Zion ranch.
