(NEWSER) - The president of PETA has written a will donating her body to the organization along with suggestions about how best to use various body parts, TreeHugger reports. First on the list is the request that her “meat” be used as “human barbecue,” to remind the world “that flesh foods are not needed.” For similar reasons, Newkirk also suggests that her skin be fashioned into leather products, and feet turned into umbrella stands (à la elephants). (NEWSER) - When it's not busy tempting the nation's men with free vasectomies , PETA is hard at work trying to right the country's lexical injustices. It's currently pushing San Francisco's city leaders to change the name of the Tenderloin District to something a little less meaty: the Tempeh District. In a letter sent to Mayor Edwin M. Lee on Tuesday that argues for the soy-based meat substitute switch, PETA writes that "the city deserves a neighborhood named after a delicious cruelty-free food instead of the flesh of an abused animal." Mark Bittman: It includes better food education for children

(NEWSER) - The US needs a modern version of old-school home ec classes, writes foodie Mark Bittman. "When people cook their own food, they make better choices," he writes in the New York Times . Let's provide food education for kids and cooking classes for any adults who want them, Bittman writes as part of a "food manifesto" for the nation. He's also kicking around something called a Civilian Cooking Corps, but it gets just a mention for now. More»

(NEWSER) - If Lindsay Lohan really wants her stint in rehab to be sponsored , all she has to do is give up her addiction ... to meat and cheese. Headline-grabbing PETA has reached out to the star, offering to pitch in $10,000 if she goes vegan for the rest of her stay—and another $10,000 if she remains vegan for a year afterward. "Lindsay Lohan is the most visible example of a real addict, and if she can conquer her addiction to meat and cheese, absolutely anyone can," the PETA prez tells the Los Angeles Times . More»

(NEWSER) - A growing number of British retailers and restaurants have switched from foie gras to faux gras as part of a nationwide move toward politically correct food. Faux gras is made with liver from free-range poultry blended with goose or duck fat, instead of engorged livers from force-fed birds. Consumers seem to like the ethical alternative, with sales at one store surging 60% last year, Grist reports. More»
