(NEWSER) - Two young Chinese girls committed suicide so they could "time travel" to imitate characters in TV fantasies, officials believe. The fifth-graders in East China's Fujian province drowned themselves in a pool, and left behind a suicide note indicating they were hoping to become time travelers after death, reports the New York Daily News . Several Chinese programs involve characters who travel to ancient times after death. According to an informal survey by a Chinese newspaper, 11 out of 16 elementary school students believe such time travel is possible. Worried officials are considering banning time-travel plots in programs during prime time—or issuing warnings, reports the China Daily. More»

Chinese employees take action against assembly line conditions

(NEWSER) - Close to 150 Chinese workers gathered on the rooftop of their Foxconn factory in Wuhan and threatened to leap to their deaths in a "suicide protest" against poor working conditions. The workers were talked down by the local mayor and company officials after spending two days on top of the three-story building. They were protesting a grueling new assembly line. "The assembly line ran very fast, and after just one morning we all had blisters, and the skin on our hand was black," a worker told the Telegraph . "The factory was also really choked with dust and no one could bear it." More»

Tsewang Norbu dies in self-immolation protest

(NEWSER) - A Tibetan Buddhist monk set himself on fire today in southwest China while calling out the Dalai Lama's name, the latest in a string of self-immolation protests in that country as well as North Africa. Tsewang Norbu, 29, "drank petrol, sprayed petrol on himself, and then set himself on fire," says the Free Tibet organization in a statement. "He was heard calling out: 'We Tibetan people want freedom,' 'Long live the Dalai Lama,' and 'Let the Dalai Lama Return to Tibet.' He is believed to have died at the scene." More»

Suicide-Plagued Foxconn to Swap People for Robots

(NEWSER) - Foxconn, the suicide-plagued maker of millions of Apple products in China, plans to use as many as one million robots on its assembly line within three years—compared to just 10,000 today, a Chinese report says. Increasing labor costs is a major driver behind the move, reports Reuters . "This year's wage increase has been quite significant and I don't expect the pace to slow down next year," says an analyst. "If they don't do this, they will have to move their factories elsewhere." More»

Self-immolation sets off protests

(NEWSER) - A Tibetan monk set off a protest today in western China by setting himself on fire, according to a group campaigning for Tibetan independence. The monk, a 21-year-old from an ethnically Tibetan part of Sichuan province, “immolated himself today in protest against the crackdown,” the International Campaign for Tibet tells Reuters . “He shouted some slogans about freedom when he did it.” More»
