The companies intend to build a second pipeline alongside an existing one from their Cushing, Okla., storage facility to Freeport, Texas, and another from Enbridge's hub in Flanagan, Ill., to Cushing. US Refineries Close, Pushing Gas Prices Higher

With crude oil so expensive, they can't make money

(NEWSER) - Add one more victim to the soaring price of petroleum—refineries. Yes, despite gas prices rising another 6% in February, refineries in the US Northeast are shutting down because they're losing money, reports Wall Street Journal . And with Philadelphia-based Sunoco set to close the largest refinery in the region in July, expect gas prices to keep going higher. "Our Northeast refining business has lost nearly a billion dollars in the past three years, and those losses have threatened Sunoco's very existence as a company," said a Sunoco spokesman. More»

US Becoming Net Fuel Exporter

More going out than coming in for first time since 1949

(NEWSER) - This is going to be the first year since 1949 in which America exports more fuel than it imports, thanks to sagging demand at home and booming economies elsewhere. The US still imports around 9 million barrels of crude oil every day, but soaring exports of refined petroleum products are converting it into a net exporter, the Wall Street Journal reports. In the first nine months of this year, the US imported 689.4 million barrels and sent 753.4 million barrels of petroleum products abroad to countries including Mexico, Brazil, and the Netherlands. BP Fined $25M for 2006 Alaska Spills

It's the largest per-barrel assessment ever imposed for a spill

(NEWSER) - Another blow to BP's coffers—and reputation: The oil company has been fined $25 million for two Alaska pipeline spills in 2006 . The civil fines will settle charges arising from both the spills and BP's non-compliance with court orders to properly maintain the pipelines, the New York Times reports. It's the largest per-barrel assessment ever imposed for a spill, and could be a sign that fines and penalties of more than $20 billion will be levied against the company when the investigation into its much larger Gulf of Mexico spill is completed.
