(NEWSER) - Since 2006, organ donations from mortally wounded US troops have saved around 140 European lives, reports USA Today . The families of 36 American servicemembers who were declared brain dead from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan agreed to donate their hearts, kidneys, lungs, livers, and pancreases to patients in Europe. It's the result of military protocol: Wounded troops wind up at an Army medical center in Germany, and those who are brain dead are kept alive on a ventilator to give their families in the US time to fly in for a final goodbye. Surgeons recycle organ being rejected by first recipient

(AP) - It turns out you can recycle just about anything these days—even kidneys and other organs donated for transplants. In what is believed to be the first documented case of its kind in the US, a transplanted kidney that was failing was removed from a patient while he was still alive and given to somebody else. The donated kidney lasted just two weeks in the first patient, a 27-year-old Illinois man. The same disease that ruined his kidneys started to damage the new kidney, given to him by his sister. Organs would primarily be used for HIV-positive recipients, say proponents

(NEWSER) - The US has, as one doctor says, a "huge organ shortage"—but there is one way we could make 500 to 600 more livers and kidneys available each year: lift the ban on HIV-positive donors. A controversial move, yes, but some federal health officials and other experts think it's a good idea, the New York Times reports. HIV-positive organs would primarily be given to HIV-positive donors, and "every HIV-infected one we use is a new organ that takes one more person off the list," the doctor says. More»

(NEWSER) - In and around New York City, there are 7,800 people on organ transplant waiting lists; last year, only 682 of those people received organs. Despite the fact that there are thousands of bodies no longer in need of their organs, many of those organs aren’t viable transplant options—either because their owners decided not to donate for religious or other reasons, or because they simply never took the time to navigate New York’s complicated process for becoming a donor. For this reason, New York City will start sending an organ-recovery team behind ambulances on 911 calls—but will it help? More»
