Tsunami warning issued for parts of Aleutian Islands

(NEWSER) - A tsunami warning is in effect this morning following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake off Alaska, in a remote part of the Aleutian Islands, NPR reports. The US Geological Survey says the quake's depth was 22.1 miles. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center put a warning into effect for certain coastal areas of Alaska. (NEWSER) - Thousands of people in the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu headed for the hills today as a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit and triggered a small tsunami. No injuries or serious damage were reported despite the strength of the quake, which witness said shook buildings for at least 10 seconds, Reuters reports. Chile Quake Shifted Earth's Axis, Shortened Day

Moving masses of rock by several meters affects rotation

(NEWSER) - The magnitude 8.8 earthquake that hit Chile may have actually shifted the Earth's axis, shortening the length of a day, a NASA scientist says. Moving hundreds of kilometers of rock changes the earth's distribution of mass, and, in turn, changes the planet's rate of rotation. In this case, the axis likely shifted by about 3 inches, shortening the day by about 1.26 microseconds. More»

Tsunami Advisory Extends to Oregon, Washington

Cities on alert after earthquake in Chile

(AP) - A tsunami advisory has been extended to include the states of Oregon and Washington and parts of Alaska, as well as coastal British Colombia. An earlier advisory covered the California coast. An advisory is the lowest level alert, meaning there is a possibility of strong localized currents but no significant inundation is expected. The move follows today's devastating earthquake in Chile, which triggered potentially deadly waves for the Pacific Rim. More»
