In New Mexico, numbers have fallen 28%; in Florida it's 10%. Meanwhile, the number of black registered voters has dropped 7% nationally—all ahead of an election in which minority voters could turn the tide, the Washington Post reports. White Males Will Be Minority Among House Democrats

January will be a milestone for American politics

(NEWSER) - For the first time in history, a political party will soon be represented in Congress by a majority of female and minority lawmakers. The Cook Political Report predicts that white males will make up 46% to 48% of House Democrats when the new Congress is sworn in next January, reports USA Today . That's down from 53% in 2010—and 98% in 1950. By contrast, white males will comprise 86% of House Republicans. More»

New poll shows Mitt at 38%, Newt at 29%

(NEWSER) - Mitt Romney is on a roll: After an impressive debate performance last night, he's No. 1 in Florida in a new poll. The Quinnipiac Poll has Romney with 38%, followed by Newt Gingrich with 29%, Ron Paul with 14%, and Rick Santorum with 12%. That's quite a difference from the last survey, released Wednesday, which showed Romney and Gingrich practically tied, the New York Times reports. Other recent polls had Gingrich in the lead. More»

Teacher Breaks Law by Registering Kids to Vote

Tougher Florida election rules spark anger

(NEWSER) - A Florida civics teacher didn’t know about a new state law when she helped students register to vote—and now may have to pay thousands of dollars in fines, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports. The law required her to first register with the state as a third party who planned to sign up new voters, which Jill Cicciarelli didn't do before starting her registration drive. "I just want them to be participating in our democracy," she says. "The more participation we have, the stronger our democracy will be." More»
