Pirates rally to snap Atlanta's six-game win streak

(NEWSER) - Freddy Sanchez singled home Brian Bixler with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves tonight. James returns from minors to pick up his first victory

(NEWSER) - Chuck James did a good impression of Tom Glavine. Just hours after coming back from the minors, James allowed one run in five innings and the Atlanta bullpen shut down the Dodgers, leading the Braves past Los Angeles 4-1 today for their third straight victory. Mark Teixeira's two-run single highlighted a four-run fifth that accounted for all the Atlanta scoring and handed James (1-1) the win. More»

Chicago beats Pittsburgh for an eighth straight time

(NEWSER) - Jason Marquis pitched six solid innings for his first victory of the season, Derrek Lee and Daryle Ward homered and the Chicago Cubs beat Pittsburgh 13-1 today for their eighth straight win over the Pirates. The Cubs are 5-0 against Pittsburgh this season. Marquis (1-0) won for the first time since Sept. 16, allowing a run and six hits while striking out seven. He also had an RBI double. More»

Bullpens are horrific for both teams in marathon affair

(NEWSER) - Tom Glavine left his first game back with Atlanta with a 4-2 lead after five innings, but that's when things were just getting started. The Braves' bullpen would quickly cough up that lead, before the Pirates relievers outshamed them, giving up five runs in the ninth inning, thanks to four walks and a defensive gaffe by outfielder Jason Bay, but eventually won in 12 thanks to a three-run homer by Xavier Nady, writes AP. (NEWSER) - Mark Kotsay knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI double, and the Atlanta Braves edged the Oakland Athletics 3-2 Friday night for their eighth straight home victory.
