(NEWSER) - The Justice Department has become involved in the long-running dispute between eBay and Craigslist amid accusations that eBay execs broke the law. Federal investigators are probing accusations that eBay employees forwarded confidential information about Craigslist's classified ads business to a team starting up eBay's own classified ads service, Reuters reports. eBay—a minority shareholder in Craigslist—denies wrongdoing and says it's cooperating with investigators. (AP) - South Carolina's top prosecutor today called on Craigslist executives to take down ads related to prostitution and pornography or face prosecution. “It appears that the management of Craigslist has knowingly allowed the site to be used for illegal and unlawful activity,” wrote Henry McMaster, South Carolina’s AG, “after warnings from law enforcement officials and after an agreement with 40 state attorneys general." (NEWSER) - Why did eBay sue Craigslist last week? Craiglist's fear of a hostile takeover played a role, the New York Times reports. The relationship between the classified ads site and minority shareholder eBay began to sour after eBay launched rival site Kijiji. Craigslist’s directors smelled a takeover in the offing and reorganized their stock to reduce the auction giant’s holding from 28.04% to 24.85%. EBay lost its right to elect a director—and sued. (NEWSER) - Before he helped bail out Chrysler, President Obama drove one. The 2005 Chrysler 300C once leased by the future president is now for sale on eBay —for the not-too-shabby starting bid of $1 million, reports the New York Times . (Note to Chrysler: If you could have made this business model work, you wouldn't have needed the bailout.) Seems Obama traded in the V-8 300C at the start of his 2008 campaign, after taking heat for driving one of Detroit's gas-guzzling specialties. He then bought a 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid. More»
