$5.3B sale gives Finmeccanica entry into US defense market

(Newser) – Italy's biggest defense contractor has agreed to buy DRS Technologies Inc. for $5.3 billion and grab a share of America's defense market, the Wall Street Journal reports. (NEWSER) - The US military's planes and helicopters are full of counterfeit electronic parts, most of which originated in China, according to a new Senate report. The year-long Armed Services Committee probe identified 1,800 cases of fake parts being found in aircraft, particularly in Navy helicopters, cargo planes, and Poseidon jets. (NEWSER) - Facebook and Instagram aren't likely to finish tying the knot by the second quarter as they'd originally intended, because the Federal Trade Commission has launched a competition probe into the deal. Investigators are already collecting information from competitors like Google and Twitter, sources tell the Financial Times . (NEWSER) - The Washington Post may have just dug Digg's grave. Yesterday The Next Web shocked much of the tech world with a report that the Post was buying the once-hot social media site, but it now looks like that's only partially true. TechCrunch later reported that the Post was actually only "acquiring" Digg's tech team, not the site or its assets. Digg, which has been seeking a buyer for months, will be left to fend for itself with whatever staff it has left, while the Post integrates the Digg crew with the team already working on its Social Reader app for Facebook, sources tell All Things Digital . (NEWSER) - Coca-Cola is considering a monster purchase to get a bigger foothold in the world of energy drinks. The largest soft-drink company on the planet is in talks to buy Monster Beverage in what would be its biggest brand acquisition: Monster has a market capitalization of $11 billion, and the company is growing fast. At $1.7 billion, its 2011 annual revenue marked a 31% increase from 2010, and its fourth-quarter numbers were equally impressive, the Wall Street Journal reports. But the matter isn't settled: Coke may see Monster, which trades at 30 times its estimated 2012 earnings, as too expensive. The company's stock price has nearly doubled over the past year. More»
