(NEWSER) - Another strong aftershock has rattled China's quake-devastated Sichuan province amid increased concerns about lake floodwaters, reports AP. The aftershocks, including one that measured 5.7 magnitude, injured six people, although the majority of the homes were empty when the buildings were leveled. (NEWSER) - Quake-devastated China suffered yet another major setback today when it was rocked by the strongest aftershock since the May 12 earthquake, Bloomberg reports. At least one person was killed and 400 injured when a 5.8 magnitude quake toppled some 70,000 homes in Sichuan province, according to Reuters. The quake hit as troops laden with explosives were trekking to blow a hole in a dam to relieve flooding pressure triggered by a mudslide into a giant lake. More»

Another Major Aftershock Rocks China

6.1 rumble is latest setback

(NEWSER) - Another major aftershock rattled China this morning, Reuters reports. Thousands fled swaying buildings in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, after the 6.1 shaker, but no casualties were immediately reported. Hundreds of lesser aftershocks have rocked the area since last Monday's 7.9 quake that has now claimed at least 32,500 lives, with some 220,000 injured. More»

Tan Zuoren sentenced to 5 years on subversion charges

(NEWSER) - A Chinese activist who blamed shoddy construction for the deaths of thousands of schoolchildren in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake has been sentenced to 5 years in jail for subversion. Tan Zuoren was charged for a document he wrote on the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square, but supporters believe he was prosecuted because of his efforts to draw attention to poorly built schools, the Wall Street Journal reports.
