(NEWSER) - The biggest political scandal to hit China in a generation started with a visit to a US consulate that sparked a frantic State Department debate, the New York Times finds. When Chongqing chief Bo Xilai's deputy Wang Jilun fled to the US consulate in nearby Chengdu, he was refused asylum. But as Chinese security forces surrounded the building demanding Wang's return, apparently on Bo's orders, he was allowed to remain for 36 hours so that he could be handed over to authorities from Beijing instead of local forces. Insiders say Wang's unsavory reputation, plus the difficulty of spiriting him out of the country, helped the State Department decide against granting him asylum. More»

Beijing declares today day of mourning for Qinghai quake victims

(NEWSER) - Thousands of Tibetan monks who rushed to assist earthquake relief efforts in China's Qinghai province are getting the boot. The monks have played a vital role in the aftermath of the last week's earthquake in the predominately Tibetan region and beat the military to some areas. Chinese officials, however, say "overseas hostile forces" are attempting to sabotage the relief efforts. More»

Victims trapped after 6.9 shaker rattles Tibetan plateau

(NEWSER) - At least 400 people were killed, some 10,000 injured and scores buried in collapsed buildings when a series of earthquakes up to 6.9 magnitude hit the western Tibetan plateau this morning. Chinese authorities are scrambling to get rescue workers to the sparsely populated area, which is mainly inhabited by Tibetan herdsmen. The local infrastructure was badly damaged by six quakes that hit within a space of three hours, reports the BBC. More»

Tan Zuoren sentenced to 5 years on subversion charges

(NEWSER) - A Chinese activist who blamed shoddy construction for the deaths of thousands of schoolchildren in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake has been sentenced to 5 years in jail for subversion. Tan Zuoren was charged for a document he wrote on the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square, but supporters believe he was prosecuted because of his efforts to draw attention to poorly built schools, the Wall Street Journal reports.
