The League's push was today also rejected by Russia, which said a ceasefire—by both the government and the opposition—must precede such a mission. Ex-FBI Boss to Head Penn State Inquiry

Sandusky victim driven from high school by bullying

(NEWSER) - Penn State has chosen the former director of the FBI to head its investigation into Jerry Sandusky's alleged sex abuse scandal. Louis Freeh, who headed the FBI from 1993 to 2001, says the internal probe might extend back to 1975. The university has faced complaints over choosing two university trustees to oversee the investigation, the AP notes. One of them, Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier, emphasized Freeh’s independence and said even the board of trustees might be investigated. More»

WikiLeaks: UN Peacekeepers Demanded Sex for Food

Beninese booted from Ivory Coast for violations with underage girls

(NEWSER) - UN peacekeepers routinely pressured underage girls for sex in exchange for food and shelter in the Ivory Coast, according to explosive new information uncovered in a US Embassy cable released by WikiLeaks. Eight of 10 underage girls polled in 2009 "said they had ongoing sexual relationships with Beninese soldiers in exchange for food or lodging" in the Ivory Coast town of Toulepleu, the diplomat wrote in the January 2010 cable. A UN spokesman on Tuesday confirmed that 10 commanders and six soldiers from Benin earlier this year were repatriated to their African nation from their post in Toulepleu, and are barred from ever serving in a UN force again because of the violations. Vatican Releases Sex Abuse Files

Holy See denies accusations of cover-up of abusive priest in 1960s

(NEWSER) - The Vatican attempted to rebut claims it has been covering up sexual abuse by a priest in the United States in the 1960s by releasing files of its internal investigation on the Internet yesterday, reports the Wall Street Journal . The alleged victim filed suit against the Vatican in a federal court in Portland, Ore., in 2002, claiming the Holy See transferred the priest from Ireland to the United States after receiving complaints of abuse in Ireland.
