(NEWSER) - With smartphone robberies soaring, frustrated police are calling for regulators and service providers to shut down stolen phones remotely to reduce their value, reports the Washington Post . About 40% of robberies in Washington in 2011 involved smartphones, iPods, or tablets, while in New York City the figure was nearly 50%. “This is a national issue,” says the DC police chief, noting that the thefts have "clobbered" her department. “We have done all we can at the local level.” More»

Venice Tourists to Pay Tax to Save City

Minimal tax on overnight visitors could raise millions

(NEWSER) - Vacationing in Venice is about to get a wee bit pricier. In a bid to save the slowly sinking city, Venice will next month start levying a tourist tax. Those lucky enough to stay in a five-star hotel will see a nightly per-person charge of nearly $6.50 added to their bills, the Telegraph reports. Those slumbering in not-so-posh accommodations will pay a lesser amount. The city of about 60,000 sees an influx of the same number of tourists each day, and hopes the move will bring in millions of dollars that would be dedicated to anti-sinking maintenance. More»

(NEWSER) - Across the country, beauty salons are hiring security guards and installing bulletproof glass, all to protect something even more valuable than the cash they have on hand: human hair. A rash of robberies—including one in which a beauty supply store owner was killed—has hit salons over the past few months. One salon, in Houston, lost $150,000 worth of hair used for increasingly popular hair extensions; the thieves ignored the safe and cash register. “Whoever did it knew exactly what they wanted,” one salon owner tells the New York Times . “They didn’t even bother with the synthetic hair.” More»

Ex-Speaker released after suffering 'minor ailment'

(NEWSER) - Nancy Pelosi was hospitalized today in Rome but has been released, an Italian news agency has reported. She entered the hospital for a "minor ailment" after feeling "slightly unwell," the agency said, without providing specifics. US officials are keeping mum on the incident, the AP notes.
