Kansas, Oklahoma warned of 'life-threatening' weather

(AP) - More than a dozen possible tornadoes were reported today as forecasters warned residents across the nation's midsection to brace for "life-threatening" weather. An apparent tornado took down barns, outbuildings, and large trees in southeast Nebraska, and Johnson County emergency director Clint Strayhorn said he was still trying to determine how long the twister was on the ground and how much damage it did. "I'm on a 2-mile stretch that this thing is on the ground and I haven't even gotten to the end of it yet," he said as he walked the path of destruction near the Johnson-Nemaha county line. More»

Death toll in Oklahoma reaches eight, including one child

(NEWSER) - The death toll in the violent storms slamming Oklahoma is up to eight. The state medical examiner’s office said this morning that one of the victims is a child. Other severe storms raked the central US last night and early today, ripping the roof off a fire station and killing three in Arkansas, the AP reports. (NEWSER) - Storms across the Midwest and East Coast this weekend forced hundreds to evacuate, destroyed homes, and killed 8 people, the AP reports. More than 10 inches of rain in much of Indiana caused flooding; more floods in Iowa were some of the worst in years. Falling trees, high winds, and lightning killed several people while others drowned. A tornado in Omaha, Neb., damaged buildings, but no injuries were reported. More»

15 fatalities reported; weather service warns of more storms tomorrow

(NEWSER) - An icy storm plunged more than 600,000 Midwesterners into freezing darkness today, crippling power and causing about 15 fatalities on slippery roads, the AP reports. Oklahoma fared worst, declaring a state of emergency as schools shut down and hospitals ran on backup generators. (NEWSER) - Trees were toppled, cars mangled and roofs ripped off houses when the first tornado in 118 years ripped through Brooklyn yesterday in the midst of a vicious storm that pummeled New York.
