It's a sign, writes Charles Lane of the Washington Post , that America's love affair with the car is on the rocks. Tensions over the country's nuclear ambitions have already pushed crude oil prices up 20% to a record winter high, energy experts tell the New York Times . That's translated to an average $3.73 per gallon at pumps nationwide, with prices well over $4 in California. Summer usually pushes prices around 20 cents higher, but tensions with Iran could tack on an extra 50 cents or more. More»

AAA going out on a lot more calls since March

(NEWSER) - Your sign of the day that gas prices are getting uncomfortable: AAA reports an 18% increase since March in roadside calls for drivers who have run out of gas. “Before it was more absentminded than anything else,” a Pittsburgh gas station attendant tells KDKA-TV . Now, "I believe people are like, ‘Man, I got to buy something else so I’m not going to put gas in the car. (USER SUBMITTED) - The price at the pump edged up 3.9 cents in the last two weeks to an average of $2.91 per gallon, according to the latest Lundberg Survey, which sampled gas prices at 2,500 filling stations across the US. That's 28 cents higher than it was last December. At this rate, says the survey's publisher, "We may easily pay three dollars per gallon or more by Christmas." More»

Lower gas worth $1000 a year for families

(NEWSER) - The price of gasoline has dropped to its lowest level in a year, Reuters reports. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.91, a drop of 57 cents per gallon in just the last two weeks. Gas is most expensive in San Francisco, at $3.49 a gallon, but is under $3 in most major cities. More»
