(AP) - Astronauts making the last spacewalk of NASA's space shuttle era today retrieved a broken pump from the International Space Station and installed a fill-er-up experiment for a robot on the side of the space station. The two-armed robot Dextre won't actually begin the $22.6 million experiment until long after Atlantis departs, but perhaps more than anything else on this final journey by a shuttle , the robotic demo illustrates the possibilities ahead for NASA—satellite-refueling stations in space run by robots. 3 More Astronauts Join Space Station Crew

New tenants include an American

(AP) - It's a full house again at the International Space Station after a Russian capsule carrying three astronauts from three countries docked at the orbiting lab yesterday. The new tenants arriving for a five-month stay were American Michael Fossum, Russian Sergey Volkov, and Japan's Satoshi Furukawa. They join American Ronald Garan and Russians Andrey Borisenko (the commander) and Alexander Samokutyaev. The rendezvous unfolded smoothly, despite a minor thruster problem with the Soyuz spacecraft. Six international astronauts sent into pods for safety

(AP) - Russian Mission Control says the International Space Station's crew has briefly taken seats in escape capsules due to a close encounter with space debris. The six crewmen spent about half an hour today in two Soyuz escape capsules docked at the station before the space junk passed by without jeopardizing the station, a Mission Control spokesman said. (NEWSER) - International Space Station astronauts won't need to worry about the newest crew member hogging the oxygen or clogging the toilet. Robonaut 2 will become the first humanoid robot in space when he heads to the station this week on the space shuttle Discovery's final mission, AP reports. In addition to a pretty sight, 'Cupola' will aid in shuttle docking

(NEWSER) - The shutters are open on the International Space Station’s new observation deck, which one astronaut describes as a “bay window to the world,” and the views are stunning. The centerpiece of the “Cupola,” as it’s called, is a 31-inch diameter circular aperture that is the largest space window ever built. The astronauts on board the ISS now have “a view of the entire globe,” the station’s commander says. “Absolutely incredible." More»
