(NEWSER) - Georgia experienced what could be described as the first viral prison protest this weekend, as inmates in at least seven penitentiaries coordinated a mass strike using contraband cell phones. The inmates have refused to work until the state starts paying them to do so and provides them with more educational opportunities, among other demands. (NEWSER) - The Carter name is back in Georgia politics for the first time since the '70s. Jason Carter, grandson of Jimmy Carter, was elected to the State Senate for a suburban Atlanta seat in a special election to fill the seat vacated when David Edelman was appointed US ambassador to Singapore. Carter, a 34-year-old lawyer, captured 65.6% of the vote. His nearest rival, also a Democrat, won 22.9% of the vote, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. More»

(NEWSER) - The Secret Service is investigating after a black doll wearing an "Obama" sign was found hanged from a sign on a storefront in Plains, Ga., Jimmy Carter's hometown. (NEWSER) - A man sentenced to die tonight in Georgia is looking to the US Supreme Court after the state’s parole board and top court rejected clemency yesterday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Troy Anthony Davis was convicted in 1991 for murdering a police officer, but seven prosecution witnesses have since recanted testimony, leading to calls for his sentence to be commuted to life in prison.
