(NEWSER) - Almost a third of US high schoolers are thieves and two thirds are cheaters, a new study says. Among nearly 30,000 students surveyed, 64% admitted to cheating on a test, 30% to shoplifting, and 23% to stealing from family. "The competition is greater," said one education official. Chronically late kids will get a chirpy call at the "godawful" hour of 6:30am, telling them, "Good morning from Marshalltown High School. It's time to get up and enjoy the day." Prom Cut Short Over Bad Pot Brownies

Four students got kind of a harsh buzz

(NEWSER) - The pot brownies that got passed around at a Massachusetts high school's junior prom did not agree with everyone. Four students got "violently ill" at the event last week, WCVB Boston reports, causing the dance to be cut short. Police don't know exactly how the students got their hands on the marijuana-laced goodies, but say between 11 and 20 teens ate them before boarding a bus to a New Hampshire country club Friday. FBI: Agents Cheated on Open Book Exams

Tip: Don't finish a 90-minute test in 20 minutes

(NEWSER) - A "significant number" of FBI agents and analysts taking an exam on guidelines for domestic investigations cheated, the Justice Department confirms in a report. Better yet, it was an open book exam. Agents and analysts consulted with others, shared answer sheets, and even exploited a computer system bug to reveal the answers. In some cases, workers finished in 20 minutes ... when the typical test time was 90 minutes or more. More»

Adolescents need lots of sleep, have odd body clocks

(NEWSER) - Starting high school classes just 30 minutes later leads to marked improvement in students' moods and even their overall health, CNN reports . Teens need 8½ to 9¼ hours of sleep a night, and biological changes associated with adolescence mean they naturally fall asleep later than younger kids. In a small sample—200 high school students—starting school at 8:30 rather than 8am lowered the number of students who described themselves as "unhappy, depressed, annoyed or irritated," says a new study.
