Tomato Salmonella Cases Rise to 383 in 30 States

Increase may be due to closer scrutiny, rather than new outbreak

(NEWSER) - Jalapeno peppers have pushed tomatoes off the top of the FDA's suspect list in the recent salmonella outbreak, reports the Wall Street Journal. Investigators believe salsa may be the culprit in the rash of illnesses, and after a drop in tomato consumption failed to halt a rise in cases, they switched focus to other ingredients—especially peppers. The agency says tomatoes aren't in the clear yet, but the hunt is on for tainted jalapenos. More»

Ground Turkey Linked to Salmonella Death, Illnesses

But feds don't have enough information yet for a recall

(NEWSER) - Ground turkey joins the salmonella scare parade. The CDC says one person has died and nearly 80 others have gotten sick across the country since March, apparently from eating contaminated batches of the meat, reports ABC News . The feds don't have enough information yet to issue an official recall or name brands or manufacturers. Instead, they're warning people to keep taking the precautions recommended for all ground turkey—cook it thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165 degrees, wash your hands, etc. (See the CDC advisory for details.) A survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that occurrences of major illnesses from tainted food have held steady for the past 3 years, with a statistically insignificant rise in salmonella infections.
