(NEWSER) - The battle over tight parking turned deadly over the weekend when a Baltimore man slammed an off-duty detective in the head with a chunk of concrete as the two argued over a free spot in front of a restaurant, police report. Brian Stevenson, an 18-year veteran of the Baltimore force, was celebrating his 38th birthday when the two men argued over the spot. Sian James, 25, picked up a block of concrete and hurled it at Stevenson, striking him in the head, according to witnesses. More»

(NEWSER) - Understaffed US nursing homes are increasingly turning to antipsychotic drugs to control elderly residents, even though most display symptoms of dementia rather than the psychotic disorders the drugs are intended to treat, the Wall Street Journal reports. White Supremacists Attacked in Illinois Restaurant

'Anti-Racist Action' boasts of dispatching diners to hospital

(NEWSER) - A hammer-wielding "anti-racist" gang in masks and hoods attacked suspected white supremacists dining at a suburban Chicago restaurant, injuring ten and sending three to a local hospital to close head wounds. Authorities suspect the 18 attackers who stormed the Tinley Park Irish-American eatery were "spillover" radicals protesting the NATO summit in Chicago. “This was a real riot,” Tinley Park Mayor Edward Zabrocki tells MSNBC . “These guys started beating the crap out of the other group. Tables were knocked over, dishes were broken and there was food all over the walls. It was terrible.” Five Indiana men were arrested in the attack and charged with mob action and aggravated battery, reports the Chicago Tribune . Police are seeking the others. More»

'Police Gang' Probed in LA

Seven suspected members of 'Jump Up Boys' placed on leave

(NEWSER) - Seven deputies suspected of belonging to a "police gang" that supports street crime crackdowns backed by shootings have been suspended from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, according to officials. The so-called "Jump Up Boys" apparently operated like a squad within a squad, with members believed to sport similar tattoos and cheer on aggressive policing, investigators believe. Officials were alerted to the existence of the Jump Up Boys when a supervisor found a pamphlet for the crew that lauded shootings by cops, reports the Los Angeles Times. One member eventually came forward and identified others. More»
