(NEWSER) - Climate change is likely to trigger fewer hurricanes and tropical storms off the Atlantic coast, not more, according to new research that contradicts an earlier study. But future hurricanes will probably be more powerful, according to the research published in Nature Geoscience. The number of tropical storms will likely decline by 27% and hurricanes by 18%, but the number of storm systems with winds of at least 100 mph could more than double, according to study simulations. Water is in decline 20 to 30 years earlier than expected

(NEWSER) - Peru’s arid Rio Santa watershed could find itself facing a serious water shortage, as rapidly melting glaciers are causing a decrease in supply 20 to 30 years earlier than anticipated. The glaciers in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range, which covered some 530 square miles in the 1930s, now cover less than 375, a new study finds. The glaciers are too small to maintain past water flow levels, meaning they will likely be 30% lower than historic levels during coming dry seasons. More»

Okla.'s July Was Hottest US Month on Record

(AP) - Sweltering may have reached a new record last month, as Oklahoma racked up the country's highest monthly average temperature ever. That's the highest average temperature, for any month, for any state, associate Oklahoma state climatologist Gary McManus said. According to automated weather recording instruments, the state's average for July was 89.1 degrees. That tops an average of 88.1 set in July 1954, McManus said. More»

(NEWSER) - Last year was a hot and wet affair, tying 2005 for the warmest year on record and standing alone as the year with the most precipitation, according to the National Climatic Data Center, which has records dating back to 1880. The earth’s average temperature rose to 58.12 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1.12 degrees above the 20th-century average. It was the 34th straight year that temperatures have been above average. More»
