(NEWSER) - An army of helpful tweeters helped save the day when a hapless car owner nearly lost his vehicle—and his life—to a pair of carjackers in South Africa. The armed thugs forced the driver into the trunk of his Volkswagen Golf. Luckily, they didn't take his cell phone, which he used to text his girlfriend. She mobilized the Twitterverse to be on the lookout for the car. Blogger Pigspotter retweeted the plea for help to his 100,000 followers, some of whom commandeered signals from the trapped driver's own phone to track the car's movements and alert police, reports the New York Daily News . Dog walker spots remains that could be linked to serial killer

(NEWSER) - Still more bones have been found in a region of Long Island where at least five bodies have been discovered. A man jogging with his dog discovered the skeletal remains in Manorville woods, a suspected dumping ground for a serial killer linked to as many as 11 bodies in a wide swath of the island. The jogger said he had passed the spot “a hundred times before,” but noticed last time that something unusual was sticking out of the ground, reports AP . “It was wrapped in bed sheets and a plastic bag. It was a whole body, but just the bones, there was trees growing up through it, so it has been there a long time,” he said. More»

(NEWSER) - Clothing and a purse believed to belong to a female escort who advertised her services on Craigslist have been found on an Long Island beach nearly two years after she vanished. Police discovered Shannan Gilbert's jeans, cell phone, shoes, and a purse with identification near the community of Oak Beach. It was the police search for the missing woman that led them last year to the discovery of a shocking body dump of 10 victims of a suspected serial killer. The corpses of eight women, a toddler and a transvestite were found in the weeds along a rocky stretch of beach. Of the five women identified, all were prostitutes. More»

Father failed polygraph about 2-year-old girl's disappearance: Sources

(NEWSER) - Another toddler has mysteriously disappeared, this time in Detroit. A father reported his 2-year-old daughter, Bianca Jones, was taken in an armed carjacking. Police located the car just six blocks away 30 minutes later with the engine still running, and the girl missing. The father, Deandre Lane, has failed a polygraph test, sources tell WXYZ-TV in Detroit, and is now in police custody on outstanding warrants. A local businessman has offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to Bianca's return. More»

20 Students Nabbed in NY SAT Scam

(NEWSER) - Twenty students linked to five Long Island high schools have been charged with being part of an SAT test-taking scam. They were accused of accepting payments to take the SAT and ACT college entrance exams posing as other students over the last three years. A principal at one of the high schools says he believes such cheating is pervasive throughout the system. “I think it’s widespread across the country,” he told the New York Times yesterday. Authorities, tipped off by rumors, began investigating after noticing widespread disparities between grades and test scores in the area. One of the first students arrested was accused of taking the SAT for six different students, including a girl, at a cost of up to $3,500 per test. More»
