Dark Shadows came in second with $28.8 million in its opening weekend. The hungry crowds make it likely movie studios will top 2009's record receipts of $10.6 billion. Avengers Scores Overseas Before US Debut

$36M in two days a week before American opening

(NEWSER) - The Avengers is still nearly a week away from its US debut, but the superhero blockbuster is already pulling in big numbers around the world, reports Variety . In just two days, Avengers has made $36 million around the world, notes the Hollywood Reporter , including $8.2 million in Australia (the second-best opening there ever), $4.1 million in the UK (making it the third-biggest Thursday opening there), and $2.3 million in South Korea (third-best opening for an international film). (NEWSER) - Disney shareholders have re-elected Steve Jobs to the company's board of directors despite an advisory firm's concerns about his poor health. The Apple chief—who owns more than 7% of Disney stock and has been on the board since Disney acquired Pixar in 2006—missed nearly three-quarters of board meetings last year. (AP) - A fairy-tale princess gave young wizard Harry Potter a run for his money at the weekend box office. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 remained the No. 1 movie with $50.3 million over Thanksgiving weekend, closely followed by the animated musical Tangled with $49.1 million, according to studio estimates. The next-to-last Harry Potter movie raised its domestic total to $220.4 million after just 10 days in theaters, according to distributor Warner Bros. More»
