(NEWSER) - Gas and oil production is booming from Canada to Argentina, and that shift away from the Middle East has the potential to change the United States' geopolitical calculations significantly, reports the Washington Post . Even the US has been able to boost its petroleum production by 1.7 million barrels per day since 2005. Since 2006, imports from OPEC nations have dropped by 1.8 million barrels per day, whereas imports from Canada, Brazil, and Colombia have risen by 700,000 barrels and now total 3.4 million barrels per day. To Keep Eye on Its Oil, Iraq Buys US Drones

Unarmed drones will watch over Persian Gulf

(NEWSER) - Iraq is looking to America to help it monitor its oil interests—sort of. The country is buying unarmed surveillance drones from the US that will scour Iraq's Persian Gulf waters, which Iran has spoken of blockading in the past and which the majority of Iraq's oil exports flow through, USA Today reports. There's no word on how many drones it's buying, or at what cost. (NEWSER) - Oil sanctions are posing a growing problem for Iran, prompting officials to resort to some odd—and illegal—tactics. Struggling to find buyers, the country has been storing oil on tankers whose satellite systems have been turned off since early last month, thus breaking maritime rules, the Washington Post reports. Though the move is intended to hide the vessels as they search for ports and buyers willing to welcome them, Western surveillance systems can generally spot the GPS-disabled tankers anyway. More»

But GAO official warns Congress about environmental impact

(NEWSER) - Maybe President Bush should have invaded the Rocky Mountain region instead of Iraq: Turns out that a mostly vacant area of land across Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming has about as much recoverable oil as the world's reserves combined, according to a US official. A government agency "estimates that the Green River Formation contains about 3 trillion barrels of oil, and about half of this may be recoverable, depending on available technology and economic conditions,” GAO auditor Anu K. Mittal told Congress this week. More»

Libya's Ex-Oil Minister Found Floating Down Danube River

Shukri Ghanem's body shows no signs of violence: police

(NEWSER) - Libya's former oil minister, who defected during the height of his country's uprising, was found floating dead down the Danube river in Austria today. Shukri Ghanem's body showed no signs of violence, although "there would be no signs of violence if someone pushed him in," said a police spokesman. "But it's also possible that he became ill and fell into the water." The 69-year-old former prime minister was working for a Vienna-based company as a consultant, the BBC reports. More»
