(NEWSER) - The FBI believes the murder of a missing high school student is linked to a child pornography operation, sources tell ABC News . Investigators are seeking Facebook conversations and emails between 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes of North Carolina and four Baltimore men, according to court documents. Investigators have "reason to believe" the communications will uncover evidence of child sex crimes or child pornography, according to an FBI agent. Barnes was missing for four months before her nude body was found in Maryland, about 35 miles from Baltimore. Barnes disappeared while visiting her sister. Her last Facebook message said she was with her sister's boyfriend. More»

(NEWSER) - A wanted man hiding in an attic sparked a shootout with authorities, allegedly killing two officers and wounding a deputy US marshal. Officers were attempting to arrest Hydra Lacy Jr, 39, on an aggravated battery charge in St. Petersburg, Fla., this morning; officials believe Lacy was the first to shoot. Ultimately more than 100 rounds were fired, the AP reports. Lacy was found dead in the attic after being barricaded inside for hours, during which police shut off the home's electricity and water. (NEWSER) - When two mother-daughter pairs were murdered in early 2009 in Largo, Maryland, local detectives and an FBI profiler declared the killings unrelated—because, police have now realized, they were duped by a well-read serial killer with two master's degrees whose extensive research had taught him how to throw detectives off track.
