(NEWSER) - This week, in unusual court rulings: Any liquor bottle topped with dripping red wax must be Maker's Mark, per the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals. It ruled on Wednesday that the Kentucky-made bourbon is the only brand permitted to carry the distinctive seal. The AP reports that Diageo North America and Casa Cuervo of Mexico has been using a similar red seal on select bottles of its Reserva tequila, leading Maker's Mark to sue over the trademarked topper in 2003. Iraq Hit by First Major Attacks in Month

At least 30 dead as bombs strike six cities

(AP) - Bombings struck several areas in Baghdad and five other cities today, killing at least 30 people in the first major attacks in Iraq in nearly a month. Nearly 100 people were wounded in the rapid-fire explosions that unfolded over an hour and 15 minutes. Half of the bombs struck at security forces and government officials—two frequent targets for insurgents still seeking to undermine Iraq's efforts to normalize after years of war and violence. More»

(NEWSER) - Prohibition came off the books in 1933, and the liquor flowed again. But a swath of the US, concentrated mainly in the South, remains booze-free to this day by law. More than 200 dry counties exist in the country, along with plenty more that are partially dry. Now the bleak economy is encouraging many of the US' last teetotalers to rethink their ban on alcohol in order to lift local commerce, reports the BBC . Scottish company will sell 12-ounce cans for $5

(NEWSER) - You'll soon be able to crack open and swig down a can of… Scotch whisky? Liquor company Scottish Spirits Imports plans to introduce aluminum cans filled with Scotch to the US by February 1. Each can will contain 12 ounces of the 80-proof liquor, or about eight shots' worth, reports the Huffington Post . The retail price: $5 a can. More»

VP urges Maliki to strengthen coalition with Kurds, Sunnis

(NEWSER) - Joe Biden called Iraqi officials today, urging them to calm rising sectarian tensions after a bombing killed at least 63 people there earlier this week, the AP reports. Biden and other US officials have been phoning Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as well as Sunni and Kurdish leaders all week, asking them to "stop hurling accusations at each other through the media and actually sit together and work through your competing concerns,” a White House official tells the New York Times .
