(AP) - Egypt today recalled its ambassador from Israel to protest the deaths of at least three Egyptian troops killed in a shootout between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian militants who had launched a deadly attack on Israel from Egyptian soil. The decision sharply escalated tensions between the neighboring countries, whose landmark 1979 peace treaty is being tested by the fall of Hosni Mubarak. Egypt's interim government accused Israel of violating that treaty with its raid that killed the Egyptian troops in the Sinai Peninsula, and demanded an apology and an investigation. More»

(NEWSER) - Egyptian police fired live ammo and tear gas at pro-Palestinian protesters today as violence continued following yesterday's clashes at Israel's borders. More than 350 protesters were injured, one critically, outside the Israeli embassy in Cairo, AP reports. At least 16 people were killed yesterday when Israeli troops opened fire in skirmishes as thousands of protesters marched from Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and the Left Bank on the annual Palestinian day of "nakba," or catastrophe, marking Israeli's 1948 independence. Israeli troops clash with Arab protesters

(AP) - Israeli troops clashed with Arab protesters today along three hostile borders, including the frontier with Syria, leaving 16 people dead and dozens more wounded in an unprecedented wave of demonstrations marking a Palestinian day of mourning for their defeat at Israel's hands in 1948. Along Israel's border with Syria, thousands of protesters stormed the fence and hundreds burst through, pelting soldiers with stones, the military said. Netanyahu, Abbas will meet president—but maybe not each other

(NEWSER) - Barack Obama has invited the leaders of Israel, Egypt, and the Palestinian Authority for talks in Washington in a new bid for a Middle East peace agreement, reports the BBC. Obama extended the invitations after a meeting yesterday with Jordan’s King Abdullah, at which the president spoke of "profound cynicism" surrounding the peace process. There is no guarantee the Israeli and Palestinian leaders would meet directly. More»

Olmert Says He Favors Ceasefire

Israel PM will send delegate to Egypt, but stops short of acceptance

(NEWSER) - The Israeli prime minister's office said today that it "views positively" efforts by the Egyptians to broker a ceasefire, and that it would send a delegation to a meeting there. But Ehud Olmert stopped short of fully accepting the French-Egyptian plan, which proposes an immediate ceasefire for Gaza, followed by talks on a long-term peace plan. The Israeli delegation could arrive in Egypt as soon as today. More»
