Guards amazed by size of Washington inmate's rectal stash

(NEWSER) - A Washington state man turned his rectum into an Aladdin's Cave of contraband in preparation for a 3-day stay in prison, police say. The man managed to smuggle in a lighter, rolling papers, a baggie of tobacco, a bottle of tattoo ink, eight tattoo needles, a one-inch-long smoking pipe and a baggie of suspected marijuana, according to officials at the county jail. (NEWSER) - The recession is providing new career opportunities for criminals turned consultants, reports the Los Angeles Times. Using the web, “jailhouse litigators” coach future inmates who’ve been convicted of white-collar crimes that presumably haven't prepared them for life on the inside. “We deal with anybody who has fears,” said one consultant, who preps clients on prison lingo, behavior, and culture, and how offers advice on surviving behind bars. More states allow convicted mothers to raise their children

(NEWSER) - More states are imprisoning babies, and moms couldn't be happier: Prisons nationwide are allowing incarcerated mothers to keep their little ones, the AP reports. Opponents of the practice say the kids may be traumatized, but one researcher found that “the outcomes are promising, if the prison nursery programs have the appropriate resources.” More»

He declines to speak in sentencing hearing

(NEWSER) - After declining to speak on his own behalf, Dharun Ravi was sentenced to 30 days in jail today for spying on and allegedly outing gay roommate Tyler Clementi. Ravi "stared wide-eyed at the judge" as the sentence was read, but had no other reaction, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger . Ravi must report to jail on May 31, but in the meantime may return home. Judge Glenn Berman also said he would recommend Ravi not be deported. More»
