Calif. Dream Act Takes Another Step

College aid for illegals passes panel, heads to legislature

(NEWSER) - A California state Senate panel has approved a measure that would allow illegal immigrant college students to receive public aid. The panel’s approval of the bill, the second part of a pair of bills known as the California Dream Act, means the measure will head to the full Senate and Assembly, where its author expects it to pass. Former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed versions of the bill, but Gov. Jerry Brown has backed the idea and signed the first part of the Act, the Los Angeles Times reports. More»

In College, More Virgins, —and More Casual Sex

Studies find less commitment all the way around

(NEWSER) - The college life is getting more chaste—and more randy—at the same time, according to recent studies. A Stanford sociologist who surveyed a whopping 17,000 college students since 2005 found that a hefty 24% of seniors said they were virgins. That's a percentage on the rise, reports USA Today . A separate National Center for Health Statistics study, based on 2006-2008 data, found that 12% of female and 13% of male students age 20-24 were virgins, up from 8% for both in 2002. That study found a quarter of those 18-19 were virgins, up from 17% of women in 2002 and 22% of men. More»

Freshmen More Stressed Than Ever

First-year college students report low emotional health

(NEWSER) - College freshmen might not be learning much —but that doesn’t mean they’re not stressed. The levels of emotional health in incoming freshmen hit a record low last year, probably thanks in part to the recession. According to an annual survey, students who rated themselves as having “below average” emotional health rose, while those who said they had “above average” emotional health fell to 52%. In 1985, 64% of students claimed “above average” emotional health, the New York Times reports. Parental unemployment was also at a record high. More»
